Why do we write poetry in school? Why does it have to have certain elements?

How come in schools, they don't just let us write? We always write essays, poems, papers, but what about stories?

Do you think we should be allowed to write stories just to write? Do you think this would help creativity?

What are your thoughts?

On the subject of writing just to write, I think that teachers should require ten to fifteen minutes at the beginning of each day to write in a private journal, one that is not graded. This could get students into the writing mood and improve emotion in writing by teaching students to write what they think on paper.
